Freshers’ Week has come and gone, and with it, the introduction of hundreds, if not thousands, of new students to Oxford’s diverse nightlife scene. As a 2nd Year watching both new students and guardian angels (Freshers’ helpers) at work, I’ve seen a lot occur over the past week: tours, inductions, icebreakers, quizzes, and even Just Dance competitions. But all events, at just around nine o’clock, tend to end with the same question: “You got tickets for the club tonight?”

The first week at Oxford is intense. Tickets might have been the last thing on your mind when trying to keep up with the Hopak as Rasputin plays through a JCR television. Through all the excitement, you may not have realised that if you visited Plush during Freshers’ Week and received a little pink Broke Thursdays card, that you are in fact entitled to free entry before midnight.

And this card is just the tip of the iceberg. As I mentioned last week, Plush is Oxford’s premier LGBTQ+ bar and nightclub, and boasts impressive lights, decor, free VIP seating, as well as great deals on delicious drinks. So, you’re not just getting a free night out, you’re also getting unbridled luxury. Just be mindful of that midnight deadline for entry – pre-drinks can be fun, but they will never compare to a free club night. The six colleges that enjoyed the Santa Hat Party last week in particular should take note (I’m looking at you, Merton, St Anne’s, New, St Hilda’s, Worcester, and Trinity College). I’m sure Christmas coming early was great fun in October, but I guarantee that free entry on a Thursday before midnight, during the actual season of festivity and giving, will magnify the feeling tenfold.

Speaking of the intensity of Just Dance, Freshers’ aren’t the only ones who receive the benefit of a Broke Thursdays card – members of sports teams partnered with Plush also experience the perk. The same rule applies – simply have your Broke Thursdays card on hand when you’re by the entrance. Think of it as a secondary ID. That said, please do not forget your actual ID somewhere.

And if you are an older, unathletic student who tries to conceal their panting after going up a single staircase on the way to a seminar, fear not. Whilst you might not have a Broke Thursdays card on hand, tickets bought in advance are just £4. The patterned seating and pop music will be just as lush.

My advice for all students Fresh and/or athletic at the end of this article? Think like a farmer. Freshers’ Week sows a lot of seeds – whether it’s in terms of friendship, your course, or hobbies. One of those seeds will be free entrance before midnight on a Broke Thursdays night. Ensure that you reap the benefits, and use that Broke Thursdays card as a sickle.
