Hannah Edwards and ‘IMPACT’ Slate Win TT23 Election at The Oxford Union

Hannah Edwards, a second year PPE student at Lincoln College, has been elected as President of The Oxford Union. She will take up the presidency in Hilary Term 2024.

Hannah received a total of 405 votes in the first uncontested election at The Oxford Union since Chengkai Xie in Hilary Term of 2021.

Despite various Oxfesses encouraging members to ‘RON’ (Re-Open Nominations) “out of principle” due to there being only one candidate, there were only 127 votes to ‘RON’. In total, 590 votes were cast, of which 58 were “spoilt, blank or void”.

The election results were a sleep for the IMPACT slate, as all officers and members of the Standing Committee were elected. This included IMPACT’s candidate for Treasurer, Finley Armstrong, who won the only contest for an officer position. Armstrong outpolled his opponent, Leo Buckley, by 284 to 175. 67 votes went to RON.

Julia Maranhao-Wong becomes Secretary-Elect, with 375 first preference votes and 141 votes to RON. Ebrahim Osman-Mowafy becomes Librarian-Elect, with 359 first preference votes and 143 votes to RON.

Hannah’s pledges included “Debate Paper Speeches for Members”, “Union President’s Drinks”, and “Committee Efficiency Reform”, whilst Ebrahim’s included “Extended Library Opening Hours”, “Members Topic Suggestions”, and “Alumni Networking Socials”. Finley’s consisted of “Restructur[ing] Sponsorship Database”, “Revolutionis[ing] YouTube Video Sponsorship”, and “Access[ing] White Tie Budget.” Julia’s consisted of a “Regency Era Ball” and a “Freshers’ Party” with “free drinks”.
