The Radcliffe Camera and Gladstone Link have been closed immediately and indefinitely due to “concerns with masonry on the roof” according to an email sent to members of the History Faculty this evening.
The original announcement about the closure came via the Bodleian Libraries Twitter page, and advised students with a booking for the Radcliffe Camera or Gladstone Link this Friday, Saturday or Monday (9th, 10th or 12th April) not to travel to the library and instead to “await further information”. The email to History staff and students suggested that an update would be forthcoming on Monday afternoon.
Further to the announcement that the libraries have been closed with immediate effect, the email sent to History staff and students said that staff at the libraries are “exploring alternative safe and secure entry and exit to the site”. It noted that the library is “hugely conscious of the impact this has on our readers” but that safety concerns meant there was “no option but to close”.
In the meantime students are advised that the Bodleian Old Library “remains open” and that the Space Finder site can be used to find alternative library spaces. Library staff will continue to run LibraryScan to “support readers remotely”.
The Bodleian Libraries have been contacted for comment on the specific problem they are facing and a timescale on its resolution.
