Traditionally, holidays for UK travellers have been two weeks abroad. However, holidaymakers are getting savvy about when to use their annual leave, using it to travel as much as possible.
Spreading your holidays throughout the year and heading on shorter city breaks means you can see more of the world. Here are some top summer destinations that are perfect for a quick whistlestop tour.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Amsterdam is often hailed as a party city, and whilst the nightlife scene is spectacular, there is so much more to the city.
In summer, the streets are lined with floral displays and have green spaces easily accessible. A wander around Hortus Botanicus is the perfect way to relax in the warm weather. However, if you want a slightly faster-paced trip, no visit to Amsterdam would be complete without a cycle on the famous bikes. Why not take one on a tour to see Dam Square, the Grachtengordel, and the Van Gogh Museum?
Krakow, Poland
Krakow is a popular winter destination due to its Christmas markets, but many do opt for a summer getaway instead. Between June and August, the weather is surprisingly warm, allowing you to see the city at its best whilst sightseeing, swimming and hiking.
An itinerary for the perfect Krakow city break should include Wawel Castle. Step back in time and unravel Poland’s complex but rich history as you wander the immense halls. Don’t forget to make time to grab an ice cream and have a stroll along the river, and be sure to cross the famous Bridge of Locals.
Barcelona, Spain
Getting to Barcelona is fairly easy from most major UK cities, with short travel times and regular flights.
One of the most striking buildings in the Barcelona skyline is the Sagrada Familia. Although it is still unfinished, the architecture by Antoni Gaudí is breathtaking. If you want to immerse yourself in more of Gaudí’s work, head to Park Güell or Casa Batlló to marvel at his creations.
Tapas bars are everywhere in Barcelona, so make sure you seek one out for an unforgettable meal. If you see Chipirones on offer, be brave and give them a go.
Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is a classic summertime destination: hot weather with little rain makes it perfect for exploration.
If you want a care-free, partying weekend, look for popular nightlife spots such as Pink Street or Bairro Alto. Here you will find something for everyone to enjoy into the early hours.
During the day, head to the Santa Justa Lift for a unique way to see the city from up high. From here, you can easily wind your way to Rossio Square for a bustling hub combining culture, food and history. Keep an eye out for the beautiful D. Maria II National Theatre as you sip coffee and eat the famous custard tarts of Portugal.
