Tuesday. Not quite the beginning of the week, not quite the end, and not quite a hump day. It has a certain liminality about it, which, as the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) outlines, describes “a transitional or indeterminate state”. It is through my penchant for over-thinking the etymology of a day of the week that I argue: Tuesday is in fact, the queerest day of the week. For is not a ‘“transitional” or “indeterminate” state the pinnacle of queer identity? To exist outside certainty, to transition and embrace a state of self that may not always feel fully determined? It is this queer liminality of Tuesdays which might contribute to part of its appeal as the prime night for LGBTQ+ students at Oxford, courtesy of Plush.

The dissection of language aside, for readers who may be unaware, Plush is Oxford’s premier LGBTQ+ club in Oxford. Located just off Cornmarket Street in Central Oxford, it is never too far to visit, regardless of postcode. While the club is also open on Thursdays to Saturdays, Tuesday nights offer their signature ‘Tuesgays Skittles’ night, reserved just for LGBTQ+ students.

Tuesday doesn’t just mean it’s the second day of the week though (well, in most places at least); it also means £2 tickets to Plush when bought in advance. Speaking of plural numbers, you can expect deals on drinks in groups of two or three, so whether you fancy Sourz, tequila shots, Corona, or something else, your favourite tipple can be found for under £13. So, whether we look at the Romantic or Germanic derivations of ‘Tuesday’ and its connection to Gods of War, it seems as though the day portends the absolute carnage at the bars in Plush if you don’t get there soon enough. Make sure you’re ready when the opening time of 10.30pm hits.

As mentioned in our Freshers’ Guide, the University’s LGBTQ+ society itself runs ‘Tuesgays’ events every week at a different location, rotating around colleges. These culminate at Plush with ‘Tuesgay Skittles’ – the only LGBTQ+ club night that runs all year round. With bars, drinks, and queer music galore, there really isn’t any place better to be on a Tuesday night. Really, with the amount of animal print you’ll find at Plush, along with the nightclub’s all-famous poles, it seems that Tuesdays and queer ferocity are a match made in heaven – or, more realistically, a match made in Plush, for as little as £2. Heed the advice of Tyr and Mars and get tickets in advance.
