Buckingham Palace have announced that Her Majesty The Queen, Elizabeth II (1952-2022), has died peacefully at the age of 96 at her residence in Balmoral, Scotland, earlier this afternoon.

It is understood that family members had travelled to be with her after Buckingham Palace unexpectedly announced that The Queen was under “medical supervision” as “doctors [were] concerned for Her health” earlier today.

This marks the start of a period of 10 days’ mourning across the nation. A state funeral will take place of a magnitude that has not been seen since that of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965. The coronation of her son and heir, Prince Charles, is expected to take place also.

People across the globe will be paying tribute to the late monarch and her legacy of over 70 years on the throne. In Oxford, it is expected that colleges will lower their flags to half-mast during the period of mourning.
