Oxford SU is partnering with the National Union for Students (NUS) for their Student Strike for Education, which is taking place on Wednesday 2 March.
Oxford SU have announced that they will be providing free coach and train transportation to London on the day. Anvee Bhutani, the SU President, will also be hosting a banner making session next week as part of a larger initiative named a “Week of Action”.
NUS are “calling on all students to join the strike and Walk Out/Teach In”, hoping that the “student movement will reunite to reimagine the broken system and build the #NewVisionForEducation” that they want to see. NUS have stated that: “It’s no secret, we’ve been failed by successive governments… Walk Out of the education that was never built for us, and Teach In to create our own.”
NUS plans to come together in central London for a day of “sharing knowledge, celebrating together, and experiencing education as we want to see it”. The strike will include workshop zones, interactive art, performances, speeches and celebrations.
Anvee Bhutani has said: “There are a plethora of issues with our modern day British higher education sector from the commodification of the system as a whole to more recently during the pandemic when students were a mere afterthought. It’s time students came together and utilised their collective voice in protest of the status quo and I’m glad to be facilitating bringing a delegation of Oxford students.”
