Manchester United has announced that manager Erik ten Hag has left the club, which comes after a difficult start to the 2024–25 season, leaving the club 14th in the Premier League. The decision comes after a disappointing run that included nine league matches, during which Ten Hag struggled to secure consistent results. After Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham, United find themselves only seven points above the relegation zone. This marks the end of Ten Hag’s two-year tenure, during which he won two domestic trophies, the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

The club have stated that they are ‘grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future’, and United’s captain Bruno Fernandes wished him ‘all the best in the future’.

The 54-year-old Dutchman took charge in 2022, and initially brought a sense of optimism to Old Trafford, showing promise by clinching a Champions League spot and reaching third place in the Premier League.

Despite high-profile signings, Ten Hag’s side began to show vulnerabilities after injuries and inconsistent performances. The club extended his contract to 2026, trusting his vision and tactical prowess. Ten Hag was under immense pressure after United finished eighth last season (their lowest league finish since the Premier League was founded) but it is believed the club’s victory against Manchester City in the FA Cup final helped him to keep his job.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former United striker, will step in as interim manager while the club searches for a permanent replacement. Possible options included Thomas Tuchel (before he ruled himself out of the job in managing the England national team), Brentford’s Thomas Frank and the former England manager Gareth Southgate.

Whoever is appointed next will face significant pressure from United’s demanding fanbase and the competitive setting that is the Premier League. Van Nistelrooy’s task in the short-term will be to renew the squad’s confidence, address defensive issues, and boost morale. For a club steeped in history and success, Ten Hag’s departure could mark a key, pivotal moment—many will be watching closely as United tries to recapture its winning spirit.
