February is upon us as we enter week three. If Britain can leave the EU, you can leave your room to attend an exciting lecture or social event! Here you’ll find the highlights of this week:

Monday, 3 February

Informative: Women in Science Panel, 7:30pm, 10 Merton Street

Organised by UNWomen Oxford, the panel will put gender issues in science under the microscope. £4 entry for non-members, but membership can be bought for the term or the year at the door.

Chill: Parasite screening and Q&A with director Bong Joon Ho, 6:00 pm, Phoenix Picturehouse

Sit back and watch the wildly successful Korean film Parasite followed by a discussion with the director. £12.60 for student tickets; buy here.

Night out: Das Haus, 11:00 pm, Plush Lounge

Dance the Monday away at Plush featuring DJs Tip Top and Weeman. Tickets £5-9 here.

Tuesday, 4 February

Informative: Daniel Hannan MEP, 6:00 pm, Simpkins Lee Theatre, Lady Margaret Hall

Hannan will speak at Lady Margaret Hall following Britain’s official exit from the EU. Co-organised by Oxford PPE Society and Oxford University Conservative Association. Hannan was an instrumental founder of the Vote Leave campaign. Free.

Chill: Measure for Measure, 9:30 pm, Burton Taylor Studio

Witness this exciting modern rendition of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure featuring live music and a majority-female cast. Tickets £6 here.

Night out: Whisky Cocktails with Oxford Whisky Society, 7:30 pm, Brasenose College

Refine your taste in whiskey and give yourself a break from the vodka cranberries. £7 cash at the door; OWS also offer termly memberships.

Wednesday, 5 February

Informative: Legacies of Nazi Persecution and the Quest for Justice, 5:00 pm, Merton College

Oxford History Society speaks with Professor Mary Fulbrook about her recent book about memory and experience of German survivors and perpetrators of the Holocaust. Free.

Chill: Spoken Word Night, 6:30 pm, St Hilda’s College

Artists and students perform their spoken word poetry. The theme of the night is “devotion”. Free.

Night out: 80s Throwback Party, 10:00 pm, Park End

The 80s may not have been the greatest hair and fashion decade the world has ever known, but it did give us some of the greatest bops. Jam out to them at Park End where there will also be free Bowie face painting and cheap drinks. Tickets to be released soon, check back on the ATIK Oxford Facebook page.

Thursday, 6 February

Informative: A Very Short Introduction to the British Empire – Conquest in Asia, 6:00 pm, St Aldates Tavern

Uncomfortable Oxford hosts a brief yet informative lecture on modern British imperialism. Free, but register here.

Chill: Oxford Beethoven Festival: Symphony and Concerto Cycle II, 7:30 pm, Sheldonian Theatre

Soak in Beethoven played by the brilliant Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra. Student tickets from £5 here.

Night out: Week 3 Bridge – RAG Jailbreak 2020 Launch, 10:00 pm, The Bridge

Friday, 7 February

Informative: Feminist Thinking Seminars: Hurry Up Please Its Time – #MeToo and T.S. Eliot in 2020, 2:00 pm, Radcliffe Humanities

Dr Megan Quigley discusses misogyny in academia, her research on T.S. Eliot, and the #MeToo movement more broadly. Free.

Chill: Botanical Illustration Class with Rosemary Wise, 6:00 pm, Department of Plant Sciences

Ever admired a postcard with a beautiful plant or wanted to commemorate the succulent in your room? Learn how to draw plants accurately (no experience required). £3 at the door, free for members of Oxford University Biological Society.

Saturday, 8 February

Informative: Science Short at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, 2:30 pm

Drop in to hear about the current First Animals exhibition at the Natural History Museum. Take a look at the exhibition to see the creepiest crawlers that have ever roamed the Earth. Free.

Chill: Ruskin Valentine’s Drawing Sale, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art.

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Whether you need a gift for that special someone or just want to treat yourself, peruse the drawings, posters, prints, and cards for sale from local artists. Entry is free, cash only for purchases.

Night out: Musical Medicine ft. Mafalda, 11:00 pm, The Bullingdon

Portuguese artist Mafalda worked Oxford into her busy tour schedule on this fine Saturday night. Dance it out at the Bullingdon. Tickets here.

Informative: Disobedient Womxn Philosopher Symposium, 2:30 pm, Radcliffe Humanities

Women studying philosophy confront the historically male-dominated field by sharing their research in Hindu philosophy, logic, Islamic philosophy and more.

Chill: Winter Foraging Course- food in the hard time of year, 11:00 am, English Faculty Library

This event is chill… literally. Believe it or not, there are still wild edible foods in this weather. Learn how to identify a quick snack on your walk home with this course. Tickets £15 here
